Best Hair Steamers You Should Opt For In 2023

You’re losing out on so many moisturizing advantages if you don’t use a hair steamer on your curly or coily hair. Seriously, the appropriate hair steamer may improve your moisturizing treatments, cleansers, deep conditioners, and so on—not to mention that they are quite calming.

That’s why we enlisted the help of curl wizard Anthony Dickey, hairdresser and founder of Hair Rules, to learn everything there is to know about natural hair steamers (including, yep, the greatest tips and techniques for using ’em correctly—and, you know, without burning your hair off in the process).

Why Do You Need Hair Steamers?

For many individuals, having naturally healthy hair is a pipe dream. This goal, however, may be realized with the greatest hair steamers. Although hair care products such as oils, shampoos, conditioners, serums, and the like are important in making your hair seem silky, smooth, and thick, they are not sufficient to create healthy-looking hair.

The benefits of these items may not always be long-lasting due to your hectic lifestyle and tough environmental circumstances. The unclean and polluted mane may have difficulty absorbing these products and reaping their numerous advantages.

But don’t panic, hair steamers are here to assist. A steamer is a grooming/hairstyling appliance that helps all hair strands to absorb the nutrients included in the aforementioned items. That’s not everything. It also adds a natural gloss to your hair.

Hair steamers aid in the absorption of nutrients by the scalp and impart a natural gloss to the hair. Here are a few things to consider before purchasing one.

Considerations Before Purchasing A Hair Steamer Adjustable Heat Settings

You can manage the temperature of the steamer with adjustable heat settings to avoid overheating and harming your hair.

Hair steamers are classified into four types:

  • Hair Steamer on a Table

This hair steamer includes a stable base that may be set on a table. It is small, light, and affordable. You can also easily save it.

These hair steamers have the benefit of having a 2-in-1 function, which means they can be used as both a hair and a face steamer. The hood height, on the other hand, cannot be adjusted.

  • Portable Hair Steamer

This gadget is ideal for those with natural hair. It is extremely small and light. The downside of this type of hair steamer is that it can only cover a limited area of hair at a time. This is the greatest home hair steamer.

  • Hair Steamer Professional Salon

Professional salon hair steamers are equipped with a stand that has 3-5 wheels. You may easily move it around. It generally comes with an adjustable hood that covers your entire head and steams everything at once. Although it is costly, it is assumed to be of high quality.

  • Cap for Hair Steamer

Hair steamer caps are lightweight and portable. The nicest part about a hair steamer cap is that you may wear it while going about your daily activities. It does not, however, create as much mist as other types of steamers.

Timer

Having a timer and an auto-shutoff mechanism is useful since it allows you to rest during the procedure without worrying about overheating. It notifies you when the steaming is complete, so you don’t have to keep checking every few minutes.

Hood

Some hair steamers include a hood that can be adjusted. Depending on your height, you may tilt or turn the hood.

FAQ

Are hair steamers beneficial to your hair?

The answer, according to the experts (and everyone who has tried them), is thousand times yes. The moist heat from a steamer helps hydrate strands, increase scalp circulation, and open the hair cuticle (which can help amp up the effects of your hair and scalp products, especially if you have low-porosity hair).

Dickey recommends hair steamers for four specific purposes: moisturizing dry hair, calming your scalp, pre-cleansing on wash day, and deep conditioning.

“Steamers may do a lot for anyone who wants to soften their natural, dry texture,” explains Dickey. “It just makes the hair more manageable, giving you additional styling possibilities.”

He also says that steamers can improve wavy and straight hair types, particularly those with longer lengths or colour-treated hair. “Everyone, regardless of hair thickness or type, wants their hair to be more manageable and lustrous,” he explains. This is where steaming can assist.

How should a hair steamer be used?

If you’re stuck on how to use a hair steamer the “right” way, don’t worry: “There really aren’t any real rules for using a hair steamer,” he says, especially if you’re working with naturally dry hair (but, hey, I like tutorials too, so if you need a visual, check out this tutorial on steaming type 3 curls and this tutorial on steaming type 4 hair).

One thing to keep in mind is that your steaming sessions should not take longer than 30 minutes (in fact, most experts say 20 minutes is the sweet spot).

When you over-expose your hair to steam, you risk breaking the bonds in your hair, so even if you’re tempted to sit under your steamer for hours on end, set an alarm for 20 or 30 minutes at most.

Once you’ve mastered the art of steaming, these are Dickey’s favourite ways to utilize a steamer:

“I find that ladies who are natural or are considering going natural also desire the liberty to wear their hair straight without heat damage,” adds Dickey. “And heat damage frequently occurs when hair is so dry that considerable heat is required to straighten it.”

What is the solution? Short steam before shampooing helps provide moisture to dry strands before heat styling.

As a pre-cleanse: “Steaming with essential oils to help soften your hair, especially if it’s in a dry, tangled state, is a terrific approach to wash your scalp and ready your hair for shampoo,” he adds. “When you go directly to water and shampoo after wearing your hair in a protective style, it often matters up and dries out.”

If you don’t have essential oils or are allergic to them, consider pre-washing with a hair oil (such as Fable & Mane Pre-Wash Hair Treatment Oil or Pattern Jojoba Oil Hair Serum). Massage it gently through your scalp and strands until soaked, then sit under your steamer for 15 to 20 minutes.

As a deep conditioner: Yes, you can use a steamer after you’ve washed your hair—just load up on the conditioner before you begin and rinse it out after you’re through.

“Textures that are naturally drier benefit greatly from the combination of steam and conditioner,” Dickey explains. “Keep in mind that the more softness and manageability you give your texture, the more things you can do with it.”

How frequently should your hair be steamed?

That is largely dependent on your hair. Those with highly dry or damaged hair should steam once a week, while those with less damage should steam once a month. After all, only you (and, maybe, your hairstylist) know what’s best for your hair.

Just remember the golden rule: no more than 30 minutes of steaming at a time.

How to Use a Home Hair Steamer?

  • Use a leave-in conditioner or oil to prepare your hair.
  • To avoid burning, wrap a cotton strip or a tiny piece of fabric around your hairline.
  • Wrap a towel around your neck and shoulders to prevent water from dripping on your clothes or the floor.
  • Keep the steamer’s hood at least 6 inches away from your scalp.
  • Set the time limit on the gadget to your liking and steam your hair. Your steaming session should not exceed 30 minutes.

Hair steamers are vital for keeping tresses smooth, soft, and thick. They assist to comb your hair while also nourishing and moisturizing it. The steam helps to raise your hair’s cuticles and allows moisture to infiltrate the locks.

Choose hair steamers that are simple to construct and have a portable design for travelling. On the other hand, avoid products that do not eliminate ultra-fine mist from your hair or are useless against dandruff.
